GED Tutor Application
About the Role:
Newburgh YouthBuild is seeking dedicated GED Tutors to support young adults (16 to 24 years old) in earning their high school equivalency (GED®). Tutors will provide in-person, one-on-one, and small-group instruction in Math, Science, Social Studies, and/or English/Language Arts, helping students strengthen academic skills while building confidence and motivation.

Ideal for college students looking to gain hands-on experience, current teachers wanting to extend their impact, retired or substitute teachers seeking flexible part-time work, or individuals with prior tutoring experience who want to give back to the community. Compensation is competitive and based on experience.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide in-person tutoring in one or more GED® subject areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, English/Language Arts).

Work with students individually and in small groups to support skill development and exam preparation.

Assess student needs and adapt instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles.

Create and share study materials, handouts, and online resources to reinforce learning.

Motivate and encourage students to take advantage of tutoring and other academic supports.

Maintain accurate attendance and progress records.

Support a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment.

Collaborate with program staff and adapt to changing student needs.
Qualifications:

Currently enrolled in college, recently graduated, or have teaching/tutoring experience in Math, Science, Social Studies, English/Language Arts, Education, or related fields.

Knowledge of one or more GED® subject areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, or English/Language Arts) is required; familiarity with GED® testing standards is a plus.

Experience tutoring or mentoring is helpful but not required. Enthusiasm and willingness to learn are key.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Ability to adapt to different learning styles and provide effective support to students who are neurodivergent or have an IEP/504 plan.

Commitment to cultural responsiveness and creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.

Patience, creativity, and the ability to motivate students in a positive and encouraging way.
